Women be silent

Gereshom

2009/09/20

In the book of Corinthians, Shaul writes of matters pertaining to and in an assembly. One of the issues amongst many, is the following. He is addressing the elders of the assembly in stating that YOUR women should be quiet as they are not allowed to speak. They are to subject themselves as the Torah says. He further states that if they wish to learn whatever, that they then should ask their husbands at home, assuming they have husbands, as he states that it is improper for women to speak in the assembly.

This portion of scripture has been a discussion of many a believer. It has been a bone of contention for today's women who are very liberal and outspoken in their way of life. It is actually accepted that women should be allowed to speak in certain assemblies. I have been directly asked what do I think of this portion of scripture. Then, I accepted that women should have a say in the assembly as women do want to have a say. I know of quite a few women who would brush aside this portion of scripture or use another scripture to support their reason for speaking in an assembly. I can go on but I think you get the drift. What I actually want to say is that some assemblies allow their women to speak in the assembly, whilst a very few do not. Even the very few that do not allow their women to speak, do so half heartedly.
